Because I want to know if my expectations are realistic? I’m beginning to think it will take at least 5 years to go from normal to buff if I train naturally.

define train naturally… and how muscular are we talking? ripped? no one can tell you for sure, but if you take a good protein supplement like muscle milk that would help… how often are you lifting weights? and what expectations do you have? 5 years is a long time to become muscular… that’s way on the conservative side
Well it’s real hard to say, but then again it really depends or your goals. Like me I’m 235 and I’m about 5’11. So I’m pretty big for my height, so height even depends on your outcome, also genetics. Sometimes it’s just not in you cards, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get your dream body. I say eat properly, get enough protein and plenty of sleep. Good luck and train hard
it depends on where you are at now and where you want to go. in terms of bodybuilding or substantial increasing muscle mass the diet is 80% of the equation. going to the gym and training heavy is the easy part. eating 5-7 meals day for years on end is not. that’s what separates the little guys in the gym from the big guys as there are no secret exercises or training routines.
the fastest gains are in the first 2 years when the body is in it’s highest most untrained state. the longer you have been training the slower and slower gains in muscle come as you reach the natural genetic potential of your body. a newbies to resistance training can easily gain 40 lbs of muscle in the first 2 years with the right diet and training program.
it took me 10 years to put on 100 lbs of muscle from age 13 to 23
I can attest to the fact that it can take years to put on a substantial amount of muscle (it took me 20 to add 75 pounds!), so I understand where you’re coming from C-bo.
There are NO secrets. But there ARE plenty of falsehoods and witchcraftery (if that’s a word). In short, there’s a lot of fiction and not much fact.
The FACTS of the matter have been covered by the previous commenters. Train hard, eat right, and get enough rest. It’s a sure-fire 3-pronged approach to getting to where you want to go.
You may have to try really HARD to get the eating part right. It does take 5-8 meals a day, often supplemented with weight-gain and protein powders, as well as other “anabolic” agents like creatine and amino acids.
